Advanced Radar and Communication System Integration Technology to Appear in Russia

The system will allow tracking UAVs and monitoring the environment

Russian scientists are working on a technology to integrate radar and communication systems that can turn base stations into radars. The complex will open up the possibility of tracking drones, monitoring the environment and weather, as well as recognizing human gestures, the press service of the National Technology Initiative (NTI) reported.

The system will turn base stations and other wireless access points into radars while maintaining the main function — providing communication. This development promises a whole range of new services in the field of telecommunications, from UAV monitoring to human gesture recognition.

Another possible scenario is environmental monitoring, when cell towers, using the radar function, will be able to monitor the weather, pollution, insects, and other things.

Scientists will invent new signals, algorithms, and methods that will be able to carry out joint sensing and communication — this will require the frequency-time resources of antennas that are already available at base stations. This technology can be implemented without replacing equipment.
