In two years and seven months, robotaxis have made over 92,000 trips. Of these, 70,000 were in Sirius, 20,000 in Innopolis, and 2,000 in Yasenevo. The Experimental Legal Regime for testing drones was conducted from April 2022 to November 2024.
As part of the experiment, trips were organized with a test driver in the passenger seat of a VATS-1 vehicle, as well as in unmanned vehicles that are controlled remotely by an operator and do not require the presence of a driver in the cabin — VATS-2.
Vladimir Voloshin, head of the Department of Digital Development and Data Economics at the Ministry of Economic Development, called the experiment on testing unmanned vehicles one of the most successful among all experimental legal regimes. During the experiment, the cars traveled 8 million kilometers in automatic control mode, of which 50 kilometers were traveled without the presence of a test engineer in the cabin.
The VATS-1 technology, when a person observes the process in the car and intervenes if necessary, has proven its effectiveness, and we can move on to the next higher levels of automation
Anton Shaparin, Vice President of the National Automobile Union, said that the second type of unmanned vehicles does not require driver participation in control. He noted that only Yandex has such cars.
At a meeting in November 2024, representatives of the Ministry of Economic Development, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Yandex, and the Digital Economy ANO decided to extend the experiment.
The Ministry of Economic Development summed up the results of the experiment with unmanned vehicles. During the testing, 36 accidents occurred, but only two of them were the fault of the cars. The experiment is planned to be extended until 2028, with some changes to its conditions.
