The Ministry of Digital Development of Russia has begun work on transferring existing digital television transmitters to the 470–694 MHz frequencies. This is necessary to free up the 694–790 MHz range for the development of 5G networks in the country.
The Ministry plans to develop a frequency plan for two new multiplexes (groups of channels) by April 2025, which will ensure the broadcasting of 10 programs in a higher standard. At the same time, the Ministry of Digital Development must complete the selection of backup frequency channels for the first and second multiplexes by June 30.
Oleg Ivanov, General Director of the Radio Research Institute, told reporters that work has begun on the transfer of existing transmitting stations, but the development of a new frequency-territorial plan is necessary.
The LTE Union previously estimated the cost of transferring transmitters to the new range at 1.25–1.5 billion rubles.
