A lit cigarette creates a bright thermal trace. The smoke emanating from it emits significantly more heat than the environment, making the smoker easily visible in the field of view of the thermal imager.
Also, the smoke rising into the air creates a contrast with the cold air around it. It can be noticed even at a distance, which increases the enemy's chances of detecting the position.
The military was advised to smoke quickly and in sheltered places to minimize the time under the influence of night vision.
