Smoking can cause the disclosure of soldiers' positions on the battlefield. Moreover, in cold weather, it is even easier to detect smoking soldiers than at above-zero temperatures.
A lit cigarette creates a bright thermal trace. The smoke emanating from it emits significantly more heat than the surrounding environment, making the smoker easily visible in the field of view of the thermal imager.
Also, the smoke rising into the air creates a contrast with the cold air around it. It can be noticed even at a distance, which increases the enemy's chances of detecting the position.
The military was advised to smoke quickly and in sheltered places to minimize the time under night vision.
