Researchers from Novosibirsk have created and patented a method for assessing the risk of cardiovascular diseases in young people, based on the analysis of two hormones and one protein. The study involved more than a thousand participants.
The authors from the Research Institute of Therapy and Preventive Medicine, a branch of the Institute of Cytology and Genetics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, note that in recent years there has been an increase in cardiovascular diseases among young people. This is due to the spread of arterial hypertension, diabetes, smoking, low physical activity, and obesity. Existing risk assessment methods are lengthy and complex, so the researchers set out to develop an accessible and inexpensive method.
The essence of the new method is to determine the levels of amylin, pancreatic polypeptide, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha in the patient. With increasing levels of amylin and pancreatic polypeptide, as well as a decrease in tumor necrosis factor to certain values, one can judge the high risk of cardiovascular diseases.
The method was developed based on a study of a population sample of 1,340 people aged 25-44 years, who were observed for at least five years, since 2013. Participants had blood taken for analysis of adipocytokines, substances produced by adipose tissue and affecting metabolic processes.
It turned out that in patients with cardiovascular diseases, the level of amylin was increased by 2.5 times, pancreatic polypeptide - by 1.7 times, and the level of tumor necrosis factor - decreased by 1.4 times.
The new method allows determining the risk of cardiovascular diseases in young people for a five-year period, without requiring significant financial costs. It can be performed in a clinical biochemical laboratory. The method is minimally invasive, cost-effective, and accessible for outpatient use.
