Couple Earned Millions in Russia on Fake Reviews

Law enforcement exposed a couple who used a marketplace to deceive

In the Moscow region, police officers detained a couple who earned millions of rubles by leaving fake comments on a marketplace. Here are the details.

The official representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, Irina Volk, said that the couple took advantage of a promotion from one of the marketplaces. The store offered bonuses for purchases for leaving a comment. Residents of the Moscow region placed orders, then left reviews using special software, after which they canceled the purchases. In total, they left about a million comments.

To exchange points for real money, the fraudsters registered a fictitious online store. In it, the couple sold goods at an inflated price to themselves, using illegally obtained points for payment.

According to law enforcement officials, the total damage to the online retailer exceeded 18 million rubles. A criminal case has been initiated against the detainees on the grounds of a crime under Part 4 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation — fraud as part of an organized criminal group causing damage on a particularly large scale.
