Russian Oreshnik medium-range ballistic missiles cannot be intercepted by American Patriot PAC-3 anti-missile defense systems. This opinion was expressed by Lieutenant General of the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force (Ret.) Noboru Yamaguchi.
According to him, Oreshnik moves at too high a speed in the final stage of its flight.
The Patriot PAC-3's own anti-missiles do not have sufficient speed for this and have a limited range. To some extent, American Aegis ABM systems can intercept such systems. They are capable of shooting down very fast-flying missiles in outer space.
The range of the Russian Oreshnik complex is up to 5,500 km, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on December 19 at a joint Direct Line and press conference. The head of state noted that there is no chance of shooting down these missiles.
