Advanced Gamma Irradiation Technique Applied

Bolivia has conducted its first sterilization of mosquitoes carrying the dangerous disease, yellow fever. Rosatom's radiation technology was used for this purpose.

Sterilized insects, unlike ordinary ones, cannot reproduce. This leads to a gradual reduction in the population of pests in the region.

This innovative insect sterilization technique is aimed at controlling the population of these mosquitoes and, accordingly, at reducing the incidence of these diseases.
Luis Arce, President of Bolivia

The technology of insect irradiation appeared in the late 1950s. Since then, it has proven its effectiveness in combating various pests, such as fruit flies, cotton boll weevils, Mediterranean and meat flies. Today, this method is widely used in many countries, including for combating carriers of dangerous diseases.

This technology can be used both in the agro-industrial complex (to increase yields and extend the shelf life of various agricultural crops) and in medicine (to disinfect medical instruments and materials).

In addition, it is used to control pests that are common in tropical regions, as well as to prevent the spread of dangerous diseases transmitted by insects.

Currently, technologies developed at Rosatom are being used to combat yellow fever carriers—mosquitoes—in Latin American countries.

Earlier it became known that Rosatom and Sirius will launch a school for nuclear medicine. The project also plans to develop programs for training specialists in the field of nuclear medicine. These programs will include training medical chemists, radiochemists and radiopharmacists, medical physicists, as well as training personnel to work in the field of radionuclide diagnostics and therapy and other fields.
