Оплата по лицу: в метро Петербурга стартовала тестовая оплата проезда по биометрии

The new payment system will start operating at the "Gostiny Dvor" and "Ploshchad Vosstaniya" stations

A trial operation of a new fare payment technology using biometrics has begun in the St. Petersburg Metro.

The "Gostiny Dvor" and "Ploshchad Vosstaniya" stations have been equipped with turnstiles that allow passengers to pay for their fare using biometric data, such as facial recognition. The trial period will last until the end of February, and the technology is planned to be extended to other stations in the future.

To pay, the passenger simply needs to look at the terminal camera on the turnstile. The camera captures an image, which is then compared with the data provided by the user to the Unified Biometric System. If the data matches, the fare is debited from the bank card linked to the ID.

The technology uses secure methods to convert images into encrypted biometric descriptors, which eliminates the possibility of restoring the original passenger photo, and also verifies that there is a living person in front of the camera.

The service is currently being tested by a focus group, including employees of the metro and VTB.
