Specialists from the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) and Moscow State University (MSU) presented a new detailed map of the lunar polar regions, as well as an overview of past and future lunar expeditions. This was reported in the press service of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation.
An article has been published presenting a map of the lunar polar regions, limited by parallels +/-55°, to show the landing site of the Indian spacecraft Chandrayaan-3 and the crash sites, including the Russian Luna-25. The paper also provides an overview of previous and upcoming lunar missions with an analysis of the goals and objectives of the research.
The map is compiled in a polar stereographic projection at a scale of 1:11.5 million. It covers the northern and southern polar regions, limited by parallels +/-55°. This makes it possible to clearly show the crash site of the Luna-25 spacecraft.
The lunar surface relief on the map is presented using multicolored hypsometric coloring, supplemented by analytical washing based on a digital model obtained using the LOLA laser altimeter of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft. The map shows the crash sites of spacecraft from different countries, and the names of the main lunar formations are signed in Latin and Russian in accordance with the decisions of the International Astronomical Union (IAU).
In addition, the article contains a description of the results of past lunar missions and the goals of future flights to the Moon.
