The promising self-propelled artillery gun SAO 2S42 "Lotos" is currently undergoing state tests. Russian paratroopers will receive a self-propelled gun that combines the capabilities of a howitzer, cannon and mortar.
The "Lotos" was built on the chassis of the BMD-4M airborne combat vehicle, the self-propelled gun can be parachuted from an airplane and swim. The heart of the machine is a 2B-06-2 diesel engine with a capacity of 450 hp. It will accelerate the vehicle up to 70 km/h on roads and up to 40 km/h on rough terrain.
The self-propelled gun is capable of replacing several types of weapons on the battlefield at once, firing both along a hinged trajectory and direct fire. In addition, NATO ammunition of 120 mm caliber is suitable for the "Lotos".
Thanks to the new gun, the firing range of the "Lotos" with a high-explosive fragmentation projectile has increased to 13 km. If the latest guided active-rocket planning projectile (code "Glissada") is used, the range increases to 25 km. The rate of fire of the gun has been increased to 6-8 rounds/min.
Earlier www1.ru reported that Russia has begun developing engines for a domestic reusable ultra-light rocket.
