New technology allows for complete processing of spent uranium-beryllium fuel

Specialists from the Rosatom State Corporation dismantled and sent for processing the last, eleventh set of spent removable parts (SRP) of a liquid metal reactor. The set was part of a prototype reactor facility stand, the state corporation's press service reported.

The process of dismantling and removing all SRPs took more than a decade. A special technology, created at the Mayak Production Association, allows for the complete processing of disassembled cassettes with spent uranium-beryllium fuel from liquid metal reactors of nuclear submarines.

Vasily Tinin, Director for State Policy in the Field of Radioactive Waste and Spent Nuclear Fuel (SNF), noted that Rosatom is the first in the world to demonstrate the technology for disassembling uranium-beryllium active zones into components, their transportation, and processing. Such fuel enrichment poses a threat to humans and the environment.

Earlier, www1.ru reported that Rosatom will test the characteristics of radiation materials 32 times faster .
