The entry into combat duty of the RS-28 Sarmat strategic missile system has opened up "new horizons" for the operational units of the Russian Strategic Missile Forces (RVSN) in the implementation of alleged combined rapid global strikes using hypersonic gliding warheads of the 15Yu71 (Yu-71) Avangard line.
They have a flight speed on the cruise section of quasi-ballistic or flat trajectories in the range from 15 to 25M in the altitude range from 70 to 100 km, noted military expert Evgeny Damantsev.
The flight of each of the 10 Avangard warheads placed in the multiple independently targetable reentry vehicle is unique in that the exoatmospheric kinetic kill vehicles EKV of the THAAD anti-missile system are equipped with infrared homing heads that are not able to function at warhead speeds of 3.5 - 5 km/s due to strong aerodynamic heating of the optical window at altitudes below 100 km.
Each 15A28 Sarmat ICBM, in addition to 10 Avangard warheads with conventional and/or nuclear warheads with a capacity of up to 80 kt, is capable of carrying an additional complex of missile defense countermeasures in the form of mock-ups, dipole reflectors and IR traps, infrared aerosols and autonomous electronic warfare systems, which makes this strike tandem practically inviolable for all existing American missile defense systems.
Endoatmospheric missiles MIM-104F PAC-3MSE of Patriot PAC-3MSE complexes, as well as RIM-174ERAM (SM-6), due to insufficient energy parameters, are not able to intercept Avangards at altitudes of more than 35 km.
