Su-25SM attack aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces, performing combat missions on the front line, have begun to be equipped with not the newest, but very effective 340-mm unguided rockets with S-25-O fragmentation warheads. Analyst Evgeny Damantsev revealed their tactical and technical advantages.
He noted that at the training ground for studying the fragmentation effect of the S-25-0 warhead, several typical group targets were built, simulating various fragments of a military airfield. These were targets with a diameter of 50 m, surrounded by car tires and plowed along the contour. In the center, they laid out a cross that was clearly visible from a height.
The free space inside the circle was occupied by MiG-19 interceptors, MiG-17 fighter aircraft, winged cruise missiles, as well as airfield fuel tankers and trucks.
The warhead detonated in the air seven meters from the aircraft standing on the ground, tearing off the planes and crushing the pilot's cabin. At nine meters, another aircraft had almost all of its fuselage skin torn off, the wing consoles torn off, and the cabin destroyed. The MAZ-200-TZ fuel truck, located at the same distance, had several dents and many holes in the tank. Fragments seriously damaged the MiG-19P interceptor aircraft located at 26 m. Winged cruise missiles standing at 60 m received identical damage.
He explained that the warhead body with fragmentation notches in the S-25-0 is fragmented into productive fragments. When used in conjunction with the SVP-24-25 "Gefest", the circular error probable of these unguided rockets may not exceed 70 m, which ensures confident destruction of various enemy equipment.
