Прорвалась в «мёртвую воронку» РЛС TRML-4D: российская Х-35У разгромила немецкий ЗРК IRIS-T SLM

Helped by Diving at an Angle of More Than 50 Degrees

Russian military forces destroyed a German IRIS-T SLM surface-to-air missile system with an Kh-35U missile. Military expert Evgeny Damantsev explained how the munition managed to bypass the TRML-4D radar and successfully hit the target.

According to him, it could be a modernized multi-purpose version of the Kh-35U ASCM, which attacked an element of the SAM system in a dive mode at an angle of more than 50 degrees. The launch could have been carried out both from the ground launcher of the 3K60 Bal complex and from the pylon of the Su-34NVO fighter-bomber.

In any case, diving at angles of about 65 - 70 degrees allowed the missile to overcome the terminal section of the trajectory outside the elevation sector of the TRML-4D radar, breaking through into the so-called "dead funnel" of the radar's radiation pattern.
Evgeny Damantsev, military expert

According to him, the TRML-4D radar, due to the absence of a low-altitude detection tower, did not record the approach of the Kh-35U behind the screen of the terrain and the crowns of the forest. As a result, the fire control system of the IRIS-T SLM complex did not have enough time "window" to tie the trajectory and capture the Kh-35U before it reached a dive angle of more than 60 degrees.
