In hospitals in St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Novosibirsk, patients undergoing surgery have received the first domestic spoke-implants made of bioresorbable magnesium (MgSorb) based on an alloy developed by specialists at Togliatti State University (TSU). According to IA "TASS", citing the press service of the university-developer, such a spoke has high biocompatibility with the body, helps bone formation, and suppresses the spread of infection in the patient after surgery. Over time, it dissolves and is disposed of in the body without harm.
To develop bioresorbable implants based on the resulting alloy, TSU created the consortium "New Technologies for Magnesium Alloys," which included Solikamsk Pilot Metallurgical Plant LLC and the Institute of Problems of Superplasticity of Metals of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The plant helped to refine the alloy formulation, and the institute helped with the technology of comprehensive isothermal forging to obtain an ultrafine-grained alloy structure.
Russia used to purchase similar implants abroad, but now doctors will be able to use a higher-quality domestic solution.
Magnesium implants are a new word in traumatology and orthopedics, in maxillofacial surgery, in neurosurgery, and in a number of medical fields. This technology is new not only for our country, but for the whole world. I am proud that Russian scientists and manufacturers are among the leaders in this field. [...] Magnesium implants surpass those imported counterparts that were and still are on our market.
The first product samples have performed well, and now a serial production of not only spokes but also screws made of bioresorbable magnesium alloy from calibrated rods of own production will be opened in the innovation and technology park of Togliatti State University by the end of November. Medical Trading Company LLC acts as a partner in the full cycle production within the framework of the federal project to create advanced engineering schools in Russia.
