Western-made anti-aircraft missile systems THAAD and Arrow-3 are not capable of intercepting the latest Russian ballistic hypersonic missile "Oreshnik". This was pointed out by military expert Evgeny Damantsev.
He pointed out that before the separation of warheads on the cruise sections of the MRBM "Oreshnik" at altitudes of more than 75 km, it can be intercepted by THAAD or Arrow-3 with a probability of no more than 25 - 35%. "Oreshnik" has a complex set of means to overcome missile defense, from infrared traps to dipole reflectors.
Below 70 km, as well as after the separation of warheads, the interception of "Oreshnik" by any means of endoatmospheric air defense/missile defense is practically excluded.
Damantsev clarified that so far, only domestic S-300V4 and S-500 SAM systems have demonstrated the ability to counter such targets, the maximum speed of targets they can hit being 4500 and 7000 m/s, respectively.
"Oreshnik" is a medium-range ballistic missile with a flight speed of more than 12 thousand kilometers per hour. It carries up to six thermonuclear warheads with a capacity of 150 kilotons each. The missile is solid-propellant: it carries less cargo, but accelerates faster, reaching a height unattainable for air defense.
Earlier www1.ru reported that hundreds of "Omut" electronic warfare systems have been delivered to the Russian military. They will become a reliable defense against enemy drones.
