The Second Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition has gathered more than 60 scientists from around the world

The Russian research vessel "Akademik Tryoshnikov," built at the "Admiralty Shipyards," will set off for Antarctica — the Second Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition will begin soon. According to USC, more than 60 scientists from around the world are participating in it. Russia, in particular, is represented by eight scientists from the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute. The R/V "Akademik Tryoshnikov" has arrived in the Brazilian port of Rio Grande, from where the international expedition will start.

It is known that during the voyage around Antarctica, the ship will visit the coastal stations of India, China, and Russia. After completing the international expedition, it will return to work in Antarctica in the interests of the Russian Antarctic Expedition. The R/V "Akademik Tryoshnikov" will complete its voyage in St. Petersburg in June 2025.

The research vessel was built in 2012 at the "Admiralty Shipyards" in St. Petersburg. It has everything necessary for long voyages and research on board.

The R/V "Akademik Tryoshnikov" is equipped with 10 stationary laboratories:

  • oceanological "wet" and "dry";
  • oceanographic with a freezer;
  •  hydrochemical;
  •  ecological;
  •  hydroacoustic;
  •  meteorological-synoptic;
  • laboratory for receiving satellite hydrometeorological information;
  •  central computer laboratory;
  • laboratory of ice loads. 

Also, four mobile container laboratories are open for scientists: for oceanological, ice, geophysical, biological, and atmospheric research.

Tactical and technical characteristics of the vessel:

  • speed — 16 knots;
  • crew — 60 people;
  • scientific staff — 80 people;
  • ice class — Arc7;
  • displacement, t — 16539;
  • draft at the waterline, m — 8.5.

The R/V "Akademik Tryoshnikov" has its own helicopter complex with two platforms, capable of receiving and servicing Ka-32 helicopters. The ship is also equipped with its own diving station for inspecting its underwater part during expeditions.

At the time of publication on November 20, USC reported the expedition's arrival in Antarctica. However, it later turned out that the message contained an error, and the information post in the USC Telegram channel was edited. It turned out that on November 20, the R/V "Akademik Tryoshnikov" only arrived in the Brazilian port of Rio Grande for the further start of the expedition. Accordingly, corrections have been made to the title and the first line of the first paragraph of the news. A fourth sentence has also been added to the first paragraph.
