The Russian icebreaker "Ivan Papanin" of Project 23550, developed for the Navy of the Russian Federation, will perform a number of important tasks in the Arctic latitudes. Military expert Vasily Dandykin explained that one of the key tasks of this ship is icebreaking.
The icebreaker will also be used to deliver cargo to remote garrisons. It is capable of operating in not the most difficult ice navigation conditions.
It is armed with missiles, has air defense, artillery, and a helicopter that can inspect the ice situation and solve other tasks. In short, this is a separate combat unit that does not belong to the auxiliary fleet.
Dandykin recalled that ships of Project 23550 can overcome ice up to 1.7 m thick. The icebreaker's arsenal includes an AK-176MA artillery installation. In addition, container missile systems "Caliber-K" can be placed on the ship.
The icebreaker can reach speeds of up to 18 knots and stay at sea for up to 70 days. The cruising range is 10 thousand nautical miles.
