Russian NPPs have completed ahead of schedule this year's plan for the production of the valuable cobalt-60 isotope. It is widely used in medicine and industry. This was reported by the press service of the Rosatom State Corporation.
The isotope is produced at three Russian NPPs – Kursk, Leningrad and Smolensk. The Leningrad station also organized the production of samarium-153 and lutetium-177 isotopes for nuclear medicine.
It is worth noting that in addition to cobalt-60, other isotopes are also produced. We are talking about lutetium-177, molybdenum-99, iodine-125, iodine-131 and samarium-153. They are used for the production of radiopharmaceuticals and the diagnosis of cardiac and oncological diseases.
Earlier www1.ru reported that Rosatom created a pilot batch of fuel for the MBIR reactor.
