Scientists at Samara University named after Korolyov have developed a method for creating a lightweight and inexpensive aircraft-type drone from fiberglass. The first copy was transferred for testing to one of the local companies, the university's press service reported.
The drone is distinguished by a high aerodynamic quality of the glider and low power consumption of the power plant, which ensures a flight duration in economical mode of up to 30 minutes at a speed of up to 120 km/h.
Features of the new UAV
- Takeoff weight — 6.5 kg
- Payload — 1.5 kg
- Wingspan — 2.5 m
- Fuselage length — 1.35 m
- Material — Russian fiberglass and epoxy resin
According to Lukyanov, fiberglass is 6-7 times cheaper than carbon, while structures made of this material are lightweight and rigid.
The manufacturing technology of parts for the new UAV in a simplified form looks like this. Fiberglass impregnated with epoxy resin is placed in the matrix. Then air is pumped out of the matrix and placed in an oven. During the "baking" process, the product polymerizes and turns into fiberglass.
