UralVagonZavod (UVZ, part of Rostec) is developing the T-72 "Shturm" unmanned tank with artificial intelligence (AI) based on the T-72B3 chassis. This is reported by Army Recognition, citing retired Colonel Viktor Murakhovsky.
According to him, the T-72 was chosen as a platform for a remotely controlled combat vehicle due to its cost-effectiveness, reliability, and driving performance. It is expected that various weapon systems and control units will be integrated into this tank.
The development of the T-72 "Shturm" began before 2022, but has accelerated recently. According to Army Recognition, UVZ employees began testing the tank in September 2023. The test program included live firing from a 125-mm 2A46 tank gun with a shortened barrel.
The combat vehicle is also equipped with an RPO-2 "Shmel-M" flamethrower and 30-mm automatic cannons. The tank can hit targets with 220-mm thermobaric unguided rockets.
The fire control system is based on technology used in the T-90M and T-14 tanks, and also has elements of artificial intelligence. AI recognizes various types of targets and can independently decide to strike.
