Siberian scientists from the Boreskov Institute of Catalysis of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, together with colleagues from the Institute of Oil and Gas Problems of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Yakutia), have developed a composite material that significantly increases the wear resistance of polyethylene pipes. The addition of carbon nanofibers to polyethylene makes the pipes 1.5 times more resistant to abrasive wear, which is especially important for wastewater and sewage systems.
To achieve this effect, it is sufficient to add less than 1% of carbon nanofibers to the total mass of the material. These fibers are obtained by pyrolysis of hydrocarbons using nickel and copper-based catalysts. This production method allows the creation of nanofibers on an industrial scale, which opens up prospects for their wide application.
The development can significantly extend the service life of pipes, making it an important step in improving the characteristics of polymer materials for infrastructure projects.
