The Russian military is actively using the supersonic anti-ship missile P-800 Onyx. It confidently fights surface naval groups, ships and ground infrastructure with strong fire and electronic countermeasures.

The development of Onyx began in the late 1970s by the forces, the missile was conceived as universal and was to be placed on any carrier in order to fly along a combined trajectory, which makes it difficult to detect and destroy.

The radar homing head allows Onyx to accurately eliminate both surface and ground targets. Helicopters with certain radars and aircraft, submarines and ships are used to detect the target. The missile with a combined propulsion system, two-stage, can reach a maximum speed of 3182 km/h at altitude, and 2448 km/h near the ground.

According to information from open sources, the flight range was up to 600 km, but in December 2022 it became known about plans to increase this figure to 1000 km.

At the same time, it was reported that the new mobile launcher developed in Russia for the hypersonic Zircon missile will be able to launch Onyx missiles, which are used both in the Bastion coastal missile system and on underwater and surface carriers.

The flight altitude on the marching section is 14 kilometers, on the final section – 10-15 meters. An inertial system with a radio altimeter is used on the marching section, and an active-passive radar homing head is used on the final section, capable of detecting a target at a distance of up to 50 km.

Characteristics of the P-800 Onyx:

  • The diameter of Onyx is 0.67 meters
  • Wingspan — 1.7 m
  • The starting mass of the missile is 3000 kg, with a transport and launch cup (TPS) – 3900 kg
  • Warhead weight — 300 kg
  • Target detection range (active mode) – at least 50 km
  • Readiness time for launch — no more than 2 m
