В Египте протестировали Ил-76, но купили Lockheed C-130: почему Каир отказался от предложения России?

Egypt chose a Russian competitor's aircraft

Egypt tested the Russian heavy military transport aircraft Il-76, but preferred its American competitor, the Lockheed C-130 Hercules, for purchase. This became known during the Egyptian Air Show, which took place from September 2 to 5, writes Bulgarian Military.

Lockheed representative Rod McLean stated that the C-130 will expand the tactical airlift capabilities of the Egyptian Air Force. Currently, the country's arsenal includes 7 C-130 Super Hercules aircraft with increased payload capacity.

Several years ago, Russia offered Egypt the Il-76 transport aircraft. In 2019, the country received two used Il-76MF models from Jordan, supplied by Russia in 2011. The Il-76 can transport military personnel, vehicles, and equipment, and is also capable of airlifting paratroopers.

According to Bulgarian Military, Egypt rejected the Il-76 for several reasons. Firstly, the country's Air Force already operates the C-130. Therefore, receiving new aircraft would not require training personnel in operation and maintenance. Secondly, Egypt is counting on strengthening relations with the United States.

On the other hand, the Il-76 was not purchased because Egypt sought more advanced Western technologies and preferred to maintain American support.
