The American Haas racing team, competing in Formula 1, paid 9 million euros in penalties by decision of the Swiss court for unilaterally terminating the advertising contract with the Russian company Uralkali. The Russians received the money only when the Haas trucks and cars were arrested by court order. The Americans didn't want to pay any other way.
Uralkali was a sponsor of Haas in 2021-2022, but against the backdrop of Western sanctions, the racing team decided that it no longer needed the services of the Russians. The contact was terminated unilaterally, which did not suit Uralkali. The company went to court and won.
After that, Haas was supposed to pay the money, but was in no hurry to do so. It got to the point that during the Dutch Grand Prix, Dutch bailiffs were forced to come to the paddock — the area where the team is controlled during the race – and arrest all Haas equipment, including racing cars and trucks.
As soon as the matter took such a turn, the Americans paid. After that, the arrest was lifted from the team's property. Uralkali intends to use the money to develop production facilities.
It should be recalled that Haas is the first American team to appear in Formula 1. Its drivers debuted in racing in 2016. The company works closely with Ferrari. The team's current racing drivers are Kevin Magnussen, Nico Hulkenberg and Pietro Fittipaldi.
