Intracerebral electrodes have begun to be implanted in patients with Parkinson's disease at the University Clinic of the Privolzhsky Research Medical University (PIMU). This was reported by the press service of the university.
The therapeutic method is called DBS therapy (Deep Brain Stimulation). It is used for deep brain stimulation when drug treatment does not help.
Electrode implantation takes five hours.
Electrodes are installed in the left and right hemispheres of the patient's brain under the control of CT, MRI, as well as a device that registers the electrical activity of brain structures in real time. Then, when doctors are convinced that the electrodes are localized in the necessary target (several millimeters in size), a neurostimulator is implanted in the subclavian region.
After discharge, the patient is trained to operate the DBS system using a remote control. A neurologist adjusts the programmer of the device and monitors the progress of the rehabilitation process. The service life of the devices is 4-5 years.
It is worth noting that DBS therapy is not a panacea for Parkinson's disease. But it can improve the patient's quality of life.
