The Vega Concern (part of the Ruselectronics holding of the Rostec State Corporation) will improve the Condor-FKA radar satellite.
According to RIA "Novosti", Leonid Lavrentovich, Advisor to the General Director for Space and Aviation at Vega, specialists are now "working on the technical capabilities of obtaining higher resolution images, increasing the information content of the radar signal, and extending the warranty period of the equipment."
The modernization concerns a synthetic aperture radar. It is used on small Earth remote sensing satellites and performs detailed and panoramic images of the planet's surface.
In particular, this radar helps in the conditions of the polar night in the Arctic when drawing up ice charts, including for laying routes along the Northern Sea Route.
The Russian radar satellite "Condor-FKA" No. 1 was launched into Earth orbit in May 2023, and it completed flight tests in early July 2023. The satellite works with solving agricultural problems, monitors the consequences of man-made and natural emergencies, conducts survey shooting to record the ice situation on the Northern Sea Route and provide highly detailed images of its sections.
It is planned to launch "Condor-FKA" No. 2 by the end of 2024. Two satellites of the group will be able to survey the Northern Sea Route in just 3-4 days.
