Perm Scientists Learn to Accurately Identify Back Pain

New method will improve the quality of diagnostics for diseases of the lumbar spine

Perm National Research Polytechnic University (PNRPU) has created a new method for accurately determining the source of pain in the lumbar spine, the university's press service reported.

Scientists conducted a study of the lumbar spine. For this, they simulated loading on the vertebral segment L4-L5. This area is most susceptible to stress and is prone to subluxations of the facet joints, which leads to severe back pain.

The intervertebral symphysis (connection between bones) and the facet joint are important components that ensure the mobility of the entire spine. Therefore, to determine the subluxation of the facet joints, biomechanical modeling of the entire segment as a whole is necessary.

Scientists were able to establish that the axial compressive load is redistributed between the facet joints and the intervertebral disc. The range was 80-20%. This discovery will allow for more accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Earlier www1.ru reported that PNRPU scientists made bionic hand prostheses more accurate.
