From drones to radars: Russia expands military-technical cooperation with Iran

Russia is a strategic partner of Iran, and expanding ties with Moscow, including on issues related to international and regional security, is one of the priorities of the Islamic Republic, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on August 5 at a meeting with Secretary of the Russian Security Council Sergei Shoigu in Tehran. This was reported by the IRNA agency.

During the meeting, Pezeshkian noted the cooperation between Tehran and Moscow in creating a multipolar world, which will strengthen global security. On the same day, Shoigu held a number of other negotiations.

Iran asks Russia for radars and air defense systems

The New York Times writes that Shoigu arrived in Tehran against the backdrop of the escalation of the Iranian-Israeli crisis, provoked by the assassination of the head of the Hamas politburo Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. The visit of the former Russian Defense Minister to Iran «underlines the close alliance between Iran and Russia, which has strengthened in 2022».

Earlier, Iran provided Russia with military drones, and the countries also signed an agreement on expanding military and intelligence cooperation. Two Iranian officials, one of whom is a member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), said that Iran had requested advanced radars and air defense systems from Russia. And Russia has begun deliveries. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the assistance.

Despite economic and cultural ties with Israel, where many Russian Jews live, Russia cannot reject Iran's request, as it needs Shahed drones, writes The New York Times.

It is with Iranian kamikaze drones that the West associates the development of Russian UAVs «Geran» and «Geran-2». At the same time, there has never been official confirmation of this information from the Russian Ministry of Defense. It should be noted that the department also did not announce the supply of air defense systems to Iran.
