The car fleet in Russia is rapidly aging. In 2021, there were about 3 million cars aged 3 to 5 years in the country, and now there are twice as many. And the number of cars older than 10 years, according to the first half of this year, is 32 million cars. In 2021, for comparison, there were 27.2 million units.
Experts assure that cars will continue to age. They cite disappointing statistics: in 2023, the average car in the country aged by 6 months. For any significant renewal of the car fleet, it is necessary that a little more than 2 million new cars are sold per year, but there have been no such figures in the country for several years.
If the new car market in the coming years is up to 1.5 million cars per year, the average age will continue to increase.
Experts believe that the aging of the car market will also be affected by an increase in the recycling fee, which will raise car prices. This means that cars will become less accessible to Russians, and the fleet will not be updated again.
According to Anton Shaparin, Vice President of the National Automobile Union, the average age of a car in Russia will soon reach 16 years.
