The commander of the Peruvian Air Force, Carlos Enrique Chavez Cateriano, said that the country would postpone the purchase of Yak-130 combat training aircraft and allocate funds for the purchase of fighters. This is according to Infodefensa.
The Peruvian authorities planned to replace the A-37B Dragonfly and Aermacchi MB-339 aircraft with modern combat training aircraft. Initially, they considered:
- FA-50 Golden Eagle from Korea Aerospace Industries
- M-346 from the Italian conglomerate Leonardo Company
- Yak-130 from UAC
The Peruvian Air Force excluded the Yak-130 as a possible candidate due to restrictions in the aviation industry that Russia has faced amid Western sanctions. This refers to difficulties with the supply of spare parts. For example, there are difficulties with components for the Mi-17 military transport helicopters in service with the Peruvian Air Force.
According to the publication, the Peruvian Air Force hopes to replace the Russian MiG-29s and French Dassault Mirage 2000s with modern fighters by 2028-2030. The authorities will hold an international tender in the near future. It is possible that the country will purchase Rafale (Dassault Aviation) or KF-21 (Korea Aerospace Industries).
