Railway employees can hand over garbage and earn money from it

A smart device called "EcoPoint" has appeared in Nizhny Novgorod on the territory of the Gorky-Moskovsky depot. It is equipped with a weight sensor and a video camera, which uses a neural network to recognize the type of recyclables and assess their appearance for further processing.

The pilot project, launched in April 2024, allows conductors to hand over accumulated garbage and receive rewards for it.

Employees of the Gorky branch of the Federal Passenger Company (JSC "FPK") can use the device to hand over cardboard, paper, PET bottles and aluminum cans. The recyclables will be sent to recycling plants.

Long-distance trains generate a significant amount of waste, more than half of which is suitable for recycling. The installation of the "EcoPoint" made it possible to start separate waste collection and reduce waste processing costs.

The device operates around the clock, and rewards are credited through a fast payment system. The device interface also teaches users how to properly prepare recyclables for processing.
