Hungarian Foreign Minister Szijjártó: The EU's 14th Package of Sanctions Against Russia Did Not Affect the Project

The Hungarian authorities have ensured that the EU's 14th package of sanctions against Russia does not affect the construction of the Paks-2 nuclear power plant, the country's Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said at a press conference in Luxembourg. The general contractor for the nuclear facility is a branch of JSC ASE (Engineering Division of Rosatom).

The Minister explained that all processes related to the construction of the new station in Paks (Tolna region, right bank of the Danube) are exempt from sanctions.

No government of the European Union can block the participation of European companies in this project.

According to Szijjártó, the new package of European sanctions did not affect Hungary's interests in the field of energy. He stressed that the authorities oppose restricting cooperation with Russia, which supplies nuclear fuel, oil and gas.

The Paks NPP, built in Soviet times, accounts for about 50% of all generated and 30% of consumed energy in Hungary. The station operates four power units with VVER-440 reactors.

The Paks-2 NPP project is being built within the framework of an agreement between Russia and Hungary, signed in 2014. The license for the construction of the facility was issued in August 2022. The document stipulates that two VVER-1200 generation 3+ power units will operate at the station. The guaranteed service life of the power units is 60 years.

Earlier www1.ru wrote that on June 24, the EU authorities published the 14th package of anti-Russian sanctions.
