Ученые из Ставрополя создали инновационный состав для консервации крови

The cryopreservant will allow blood to be stored at temperatures down to -40 °C

Scientists from the North Caucasus Federal University (NCFU) have developed a special composition that allows preserving the structure and properties of blood during freezing without ultra-low temperatures. This was reported in the press service of the university.

Previously, blood was preserved at temperatures up to -70°C. Specialists used liquid nitrogen and expensive equipment that provided its continuous supply.

The development of Stavropol scientists will allow preserving blood at temperatures from -20°C to -40°C. This will reduce the cost of storing the material and eliminate the need to use a number of toxic components.

This will not only reduce the cost of the cryopreservation process, but also significantly increase the efficiency and quality of blood recovery to save people's lives.
Dmitry Bespalov, Rector of NCFU

The new method will help preserve blood in its entirety, unlike the old methods, when individual components of blood were frozen. This became possible due to the addition of an effective and safe cryoprotector (a substance that protects living tissues from the damaging effects of freezing) to the composition.

One of the main components with a cryoprotective effect in our composition is the disaccharide lactulose. During the study of data on the toxic, teratogenic or mutagenic effects of lactulose in animal experiments and in clinical studies involving humans, none were obtained.
Alexander Vlasov, Associate Professor of the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Medicine of the Medical and Biological Faculty of NCFU

To reduce the toxic effects, polyhydric alcohols, proteins, carbohydrates and lipids were also added to the composition. In the future, specialists plan to establish the mechanism of the cryoprotective effect of lactulose at even lower temperatures.
