The 91N6M Detector Will Be Able to Detect the Fuselages of ATACMS Missiles on the Ascending Branch of the Trajectory

Foreign media reported on the deployment of promising S-500 "Prometheus" anti-aircraft missile systems ("Triumfator-M", developed by JSC "Concern VKO "Almaz-Antey"") of the Russian Aerospace Forces in Crimea. At the same time, there was no official confirmation of this data from the Russian Ministry of Defense. Military expert Evgeny Damantsev speculated whether the S-500 would be able to intercept American ATACMS Block IA, ATACMS Mod 2000 and French SCALP-EG missiles if they were launched.

According to Damantsev, the S-500 "Prometheus" can be detected if the 91N6M long-range radar detection radar for ballistic and aerodynamic targets is turned on, as well as the 77T6 illumination and guidance radar. These radars have unique amplitude-frequency parameters and operating modes. They can be identified by AEELS radio intelligence systems of RC-135W/V aircraft of the US Air Force.

The military expert stressed that, thanks to the advanced technical characteristics of the S-500 "Prometheus" air defense system, Western missiles will not break through the air defense.

If we consider this issue in terms of the energy potential, noise immunity and throughput of the radar equipment of the S-500 "Prometheus" complex, as well as the flight performance characteristics of the high-speed two-stage 77N6-N anti-aircraft interceptor missiles, then there can be no question of any large-scale breakthrough of anti-missile barriers.

He explained that the 91N6M detector will be able to calculate the fuselages of ATACMS missiles on the ascending branch of the trajectory at a distance of 640 - 800 km. At the same time, the reflecting surface of the missile may exceed 1 - 1.5 sq. m.

Then the target designation is issued to 76/77T6 illumination radars with an ATACMS "capture" range of about 300 - 250 km. And when the ATACMS missiles reach the descending branches of the trajectories and are at a distance of less than 100 km from the S-500 "Prometheus", the process of intercepting them with 77N6-N anti-missiles will begin.

Damantsev noted that the S-500 "Prometheus" battery, equipped with its own 77T6 illumination and guidance radar, will be able to simultaneously intercept 10 ATACMS missiles. If S-350A "Vityaz" air defense systems with highly maneuverable 9M96DM anti-aircraft missiles are placed with the S-500 batteries, then there will be no air defense breakthrough, he concluded.
