Specialists from Novosibirsk State University (NSU) analyzed methane samples using a mass spectrometer in the swamps of West Siberia. This was reported by the university's press service.
The aim of the study was to identify the origin, age, and delivery process of methane to the floodplains of the Middle Ob region.
For the first time, radiocarbon analysis of methane extracted from swamp gas samples taken by researchers from Yugra State University from the seeps of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug swamps was performed on an accelerator mass spectrometer.
NSU scientists extracted methane and obtained graphite targets using a gasifier. The analysis lasted more than a year and made it clear that there is a powerful source of methane in Western Siberia, which will exist until the swamps disappear.
The university's press service also noted that scientists now have a clear understanding of how closely landscapes are interconnected. This will allow them to predict their future changes in the event of anthropogenic impact or global warming.
