Testing of Russia's first autonomous tram has begun in Moscow on route No. 10 – from Kulakova Street to Shchukinskaya metro station. It has traveled over 100 km in a week, according to Moscow Deputy Mayor Maxim Liksutov, who oversees transport issues.
The autonomous technology is a unique development in Europe, owned by the Moscow government.
The tram is currently undergoing the first phase of testing: a driver is at the controls, while artificial intelligence (AI) duplicates their actions. This phase will last until the end of 2024.
In the second phase, AI will independently control the movement, and the driver will provide backup. After such training, an automated control system will appear in more than 80% of the capital's trams.
