SPbSU Researchers Investigate the Reaction of Sunflower Oil and Alcohols

Researchers at St. Petersburg State University (SPbSU) have investigated the chemical reactions of propanol, butanol, and pentanol with sunflower oil. This helped scientists explain the patterns of behavior of alcohol mixtures when interacting with vegetable fats. The results of the experiments can be used in bioenergy.

It turned out that when interacting with sunflower oil, alcohols release an equal amount of heat. The experiment was carried out at a temperature of 30°C (engine operating temperature). Scientists believe that alcohol-oil mixtures can potentially be used as additives to biofuels.

To ensure the accuracy of the measurements, we checked the chemical stability of these mixtures. This provided valuable information about the physicochemical properties of "alcohol-oil" systems from the point of view of thermodynamics and thermochemistry.

The university's press service explained that biodiesel fuel is environmentally friendly. It can be used to refuel vehicles with diesel engines. Mixtures of different alcohols and natural oils are used for the production of biofuels.

Earlier, www1.ru reported that Rosatom will create innovative fuel for "reactors of the future."
