Employees of Tomsk Polytechnic University have begun work on creating transparent armor ceramics. The development is planned to be used in the fields of electronics, energy, as well as in the aerospace and defense industries. Armor ceramics will allow creating optics with low cost, but at the same time have high chemical, mechanical and radiation resistance. According to the project manager, such ceramic materials can be used "as transparent armor, infrared windows for missile launchers, windows of spacecraft, scanners, in night vision systems, as well as a basis for scintillation and laser materials."
The ceramics will have high strength, low weight, thermal and corrosion resistance. The production of such materials is easy to scale, and their cost is largely competitive with optical counterparts.
The main advantage of transparent ceramic materials over traditional optical materials is the ability to vary thermal, optical, mechanical and strength properties. One of the most promising transparent ceramic materials is aluminum magnesium spinel (MgAl2O4, AMS).
Ultra-strong ceramics are already widely used in industry. Most often, the material is used to create laser installations, spacecraft windows, scanners and transparent armor plates.
Earlier it was reported that employees of Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) have created an effective filter for hydrogen purification.
