У российского атомохода «Якутия» тестируют дизель-генераторы

The equipment is triggered if there is an emergency with the reactor

Baltic Shipyard, which is part of USC, has begun testing backup diesel generators for the nuclear icebreaker "Yakutia" of Project 22220. Commissioning works have already been carried out.

As explained in USC, such backup diesel generators of nuclear-powered ships are two, one for each side. They serve to provide power to the equipment and systems of the nuclear-powered ship in the event of an emergency shutdown of the reactor plant.

This is important: universal nuclear icebreakers of Project 22220 are the largest and most powerful icebreaking vessels in the world. Without them, year-round navigation in the Western Arctic will stop. In the coming years, the project vessels will become the basis of the Russian civilian icebreaker fleet, the official customer of nuclear icebreakers of Project 22220 is FSUE Atomflot (part of Rosatom State Corporation).

The Arktika, Sibir and Ural nuclear-powered ships have already been handed over to the customer. The Yakutia and Chukotka icebreakers are at different stages of construction, and the Leningrad was laid down at the end of January. The laying of the nuclear-powered ship of the same project, Stalingrad, is also under preparation.

They replace the nuclear icebreakers of projects 10520 and 10580, the service life of which has already expired or is coming to an end.
