The Ministry of Digital Affairs has announced the regions where pilot zones for the 5G network will be launched. These include Moscow and the Moscow region, St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region, Kazan, Novosibirsk, and Nizhny Novgorod, according to the press service of the ministry.
For this purpose, "New Digital Solutions" will test the compatibility of Russian base stations with 5G networks.
About Base Stations in Russia
From the third quarter of 2023 to the first quarter of 2024, telecom operators installed base stations in 86 settlements in 16 regions of the country. It is known that until the end of 2025, operators will be given a discount for the use of radio frequency spectrum if they install from 1 to 4 base stations per quarter in settlements with a population of up to 1 thousand people.
Currently, the largest Russian mobile operators pay about 15–17 billion rubles per year for the use of radio frequencies. It is expected that in 2024 these costs may increase significantly.
Earlier it was reported that Rostelecom will establish the production of base stations for mobile communications this year. This need arose after the departure of foreign suppliers from the market due to sanctions.
