Rosatom, at the ATOMEXPO-2024 international exhibition, launched test trials of unique equipment for the production of innovative nuclear fuel for the BREST-OD-300 fourth-generation reactor, the corporation's press service reported.
The launch was carried out via teleconference with the city of Seversk, Tomsk Region. It houses a carbothermic synthesis line on a module for the production of MNUP fuel (mixed nitride uranium-plutonium fuel). It is not used in industry, but will be used for fast neutron reactors with sodium and lead coolants.
According to Rosatom head Alexei Likhachev, the corporation is moving to a two-component nuclear energy system, introducing fast reactor technologies and a closed nuclear fuel cycle.
The launch of the MNUP fuel production module is the first milestone of the Proryv project
He emphasized that these are unique technologies and equipment. "No one but Rosatom" in the world has undertaken to solve this problem, Likhachev concluded.
Earlier, the head of Rosatom stated that the corporation had received new orders for the creation of floating nuclear power plants. Interest in such facilities has been shown in Africa.
