Russian protective grilles on tank turrets have aroused the envy of Military Watch Magazine with their unique protection against ATGMs and kamikaze drones. The technology, dubbed "barbecue," has already been borrowed from the Russians by Israel, India, China, and a number of other countries — and for good reason. The publication demonstrated how effective the "barbecues" are by analyzing images of the T-90M "Proryv" after a kamikaze drone attack.
It is noted that during the kamikaze drone attack, the tank's protective elements and the upper metal screen were damaged.
The "Kontakt-1" dynamic protection blocks on the upper protective visor detonated. The vehicle itself otherwise remains completely undamaged and was sent to the front after minor maintenance to replace the damaged protection systems.
The miracle "barbecue" is a lattice screen up to half a meter high. It is welded to the tank turret and, in combination with dynamic protection, keeps the crew and the tank itself safe. Flexible anti-cumulative mesh is located on the sides of the structure, so if the vehicle is severely damaged, it can be left quickly.
This type of protection is produced by "Uralvagonzavod", a subsidiary of the Rostec state corporation. "Barbecues" can be seen on T-90M, T-80BVM and T-72B3M tanks, as well as on IFVs, self-propelled artillery and APCs.
