«SpetsDorProekt», a company that maintains, modernizes, and develops ITS in Moscow and other cities in Russia, published a video on its Telegram channel of an accident on the Moscow Ring Road involving a self-driving car from Yandex.
The video began to be discussed in news Telegram channels, and they argued about how safe it is to use "driverless taxis", and how such a taxi generally drives in a metropolis without a driver.
«The First Technical» contacted representatives of Yandex and found out what actually happened to the car on the Moscow Ring Road and whether there was a driver inside it. It turned out that the section of the Moscow Ring Road where the accident occurred is on the route of the self-driving car along the route "garage - test site for research", so you can regularly see self-driving cars on it. But there is still a "pilot" in them.
Yandex's self-driving car was moving in manual mode - the driver-tester was in control. Yandex's self-driving cars do not move in autonomous mode on the Moscow Ring Road.
The car in front made an emergency stop due to an accident in the adjacent lane. The driver-tester also began to brake urgently, but could not stop the car due to the slippery road. As a result of the collision, no one was injured, and the cars sustained minor damage.
It is worth noting that the liability of self-driving cars to third parties in the company is insured for 10 million rubles.
