AI Examined an MRI Scan of a Patient with Multiple Sclerosis

Moscow will share computer vision technologies with the regions and provide access to the capital's best AI services for all medical organizations and regions. Now, radiologists across the country will be able to describe radiological examinations faster and more accurately.

As Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin wrote in his Telegram channel, the Center for Diagnostics and Telemedicine of the Moscow City Health Department has created a special platform where medical organizations can familiarize themselves with available AI services, operating rules, and technical requirements for connecting to them.

During the visit, the head of state was shown how artificial intelligence diagnoses a patient with multiple sclerosis. It spends 5-10 minutes studying an MRI scan instead of 30-40 minutes. During the presentation to the president, changes were marked on the MRI scan, and the AI demonstrably formulated a preliminary conclusion protocol. However, Putin, assessing the system's operation, as noted by «Российская газета», discovered a miscalculation in the AI's work and pointed it out to the doctor on the monitor. The doctor confirmed that this happens, and if there are miscalculations, the medics report them.

The President then went to the Forum of Future Technologies, organized by the Roscongress Foundation as part of the Decade of Science and Technology in Russia. He reviewed the exposition of the exhibition of Russian medical scientific achievements and innovations and opened the plenary session of the second Forum of Future Technologies "Modern Medical Technologies. Challenges of Tomorrow - Ahead of Time".

«Первый технический» selected the most interesting points from what the president said regarding the direction of medical development and research. These are:

  • development of sanitary aviation - purchase and production of new equipment, construction of new helipads and creation of infrastructure;
  • "radical" modernization of hospital emergency departments, providing them with modern equipment, including resuscitation equipment, and improving the skills of medical workers in emergency departments and ambulance crews;
  • increased support for medical care in cities and rural areas: from technical support to salaries. From March 1, the president proposed increasing monthly payments for medical professionals in small towns, district centers, and villages. In cities with a population of 50,000 to 100,000 people, doctors will receive 29,000 rubles in addition to their base salary, and paramedical staff will receive 13,000 rubles. In settlements with a population of less than 50,000 people,  doctors will receive 50,000 rubles monthly in addition to their salary, and paramedical staff will receive 30,000 rubles. And from April 1, he proposed increasing the salary component for medical professionals in the regions by 50 percent;
  • expansion of the network of national medical research centers and strengthening their interaction with other research institutions;
  • reliable protection of the intellectual property rights of leading medical centers and research institutions that create unique technologies.
I believe that when transferring intellectual property rights to manufacturers, that is, commercializing breakthrough scientific solutions, research teams should receive decent remuneration, the so-called royalties. The amount of such payments should be calculated according to clear rules and a unified methodology. We talked about this when you proposed the world's first vaccine against COVID.
Russian President Vladimir Putin
  • creation of a modern legal framework for the creation, testing, and use of the most advanced medical technologies;
  • unified work in the direction of medicine and scientific activity in general by ministries and departments of regions, state-owned companies, and businesses.
