Russian Railways (RZD) has announced plans to purchase nearly 900 railcars, entirely produced in Russia, during 2024. The information was announced following a speech by the company's Deputy Head, Ivan Kolesnikov, at the final meeting of the RZD board.
According to the announcement, it is planned to purchase 550 railcars for use in long-distance trains and 235 railcars for suburban services produced by JSC "Transmashholding" (TMH). Additionally, as part of the rolling stock renewal program, RZD will acquire 103 new Russian "Finist" electric trains, manufactured at the "Ural Locomotives" plant.
One of the priorities for the development of RZD's passenger complex this year is the renewal of rolling stock and digitalization. At the final board meeting, RZD's Deputy Head, Ivan Kolesnikov, also announced the launch of a project to update the passenger navigation system at Russian railway stations.
The new navigation system, aimed at creating a unified information space for passengers throughout their journey, will be implemented with consideration for ease of use and accessibility of interactive panels. The pilot project of this system is planned to be launched this year at the railway station in Nizhny Novgorod, with subsequent scaling to the entire network of Russian railways.
Earlier, RZD announced the need to purchase 1,000 new locomotives annually starting from 2025.
