The first elements of an intelligent transport system have appeared in Samara on two of the busiest streets. These are smart traffic lights and detectors for collecting data on traffic intensity, based on which the traffic light system is formed.
The road's capacity and safety increase with the use of ITS, and it also helps to calculate the most popular traffic flows among the population. This way, regional authorities can determine where new roads and interchanges are needed.
In addition to ITS, five automatic weather stations have been installed on two streets in Samara. They measure air and pavement temperature, precipitation, wind speed and a number of other parameters. This data can be broadcast on information boards for drivers and transmitted to public utilities - traffic jams and icing can be detected in advance.
Intelligent transport systems have been installed since 2020 in agglomerations with a population of more than 300 thousand people under the national project "Safe High-Quality Roads". By the end of 2023, they had already been installed in 57 urban agglomerations of 51 constituent entities of the Russian Federation.
Moscow's experience is actively used in the project, where AI has been controlling hundreds of intersections in the city for six years already.
