An agreement has been established between Russia and Kyrgyzstan to create a united regional air defense system. Now all Kyrgyz strategic facilities and the sky of the Republic are under protection.

Previously, the national air defense systems protected only the capital of the republic - Bishkek. The hydroelectric power stations, thermal power plants, factories, tailing dumps [Kyrgyzstan has tailing dumps from Soviet-era production - Ed.], strategic highways and other objects were vulnerable to attacks.

The agreement was concluded for five years with an automatic extension, unless either party notifies in advance of its intention to terminate the agreement.

Kyrgyzstan provides 5 hectares of land for the deployment of the system. Meanwhile, Russia coordinates the actions of the United Regional Air Defense Forces in the collective security zone, with Kyrgyzstan managing those actions. All financial and material-technical expenses are covered by Russia.

And here's why. The air defense umbrella, in the first instance, helps Russia itself. For twenty years, the Russian military base 'Kant' has been located in Kyrgyzstan. It is only 20 km from Bishkek, and the Kyrgyz air defense systems did not protect it from potential attacks by unmanned aerial vehicles and missiles. Now a plot for the deployment of Russian troops and equipment has been allocated by Kyrgyzstan right next to the base.

Secondly, the united air defense system can counter threats from international terrorist organizations in the region. This is important for ensuring the security not only of Russia and Kyrgyzstan, but also for its provision along the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Collective Security Treaty Organization, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. Under the agreement, the countries will conduct joint exercises, prepare personnel, modernize air defense systems.
