The Governor of the Kaluga Region, Vladislav Shapsha, stated that the plants previously managed by Volkswagen, Peugeot, Citroen, and Volvo will reopen. According to him, a direction of development has been determined for all enterprises.
At the former Volvo production facilities, parts will be stamped and painted, and modular assembly will be carried out, the head of the region added. Negotiations on the Volkswagen plant have not yet been completed, and the authorities are choosing a reliable technology partner. However, here, as at the Peugeot plant, the first car kits will arrive in early December 2023, he explained. Shapsha emphasized that the PCMA Rus plant is currently working on technologies that are focused on localization.
Against the backdrop of sanctions against Russia in 2022, major foreign car brands left the Russian market. In August of the same year, the authorities of the Kaluga Region announced that 19 enterprises that produced cars and components were idle.
Earlier it became known that the Volkswagen plant is planning to produce cars of the Chinese brand Chery. The first batch will number 120 units.
